Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Dark

Far across the ocean, thousands of miles away from the sunlit gardens of the Sterling estate, the world was bitterly cold.
Inside a high-security federal transport facility overlooking the frozen Siberian tundra, the heavy iron door of cell 104 slammed shut with a deafening clang.
Juliette—now known only by her prisoner number, 884-Delta—sat shivering on a narrow concrete slab covered by a thin, scratchy wool blanket. The tiny high window in her cell revealed a bleak, endless expanse of white snow falling under a sullen gray sky. There were no silk dresses, no diamond rings, no adoring socialites, and no luxury penthouses. There was only the howling wind, the biting sub-zero cold, and the crushing weight of absolute isolation.
She pulled her thin orange jumpsuit tightly around her trembling frame, her teeth chattering uncontrollably. Her mind raced in circles, haunted by the memory of Christopher’s icy whisper before she was dragged away: “Enjoy the dark, Juliette.”
She had possessed everything. She had outsmarted bankers, married billionaires, and buried husbands without leaving a single trace. She had believed herself to be a master predator operating on a higher plane of intelligence.
And yet, she had fallen right into the most elaborate trap in corporate history. Christopher hadn't been an unsuspecting victim; he had been the architect of her ultimate demise, playing a three-year chess match where every move she thought she made was actually orchestrated by him.
A heavy pair of heavy-soled boots echoed down the concrete corridor outside her cell. Juliette flinched, holding her breath as a prison guard approached her door, sliding a small tin bowl of gray, tasteless gruel through the slot at the bottom.

"Eat up," the guard muttered in broken English, his voice devoid of any human warmth. "You have a visitor tomorrow. Someone from international intelligence wants to ask you about your previous aliases in Zurich."
Juliette buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged, desperate sob that echoed off the cold concrete walls. The nightmare had no end. She had tried to steal a billionaire’s fortune, only to discover she had traded her freedom for a living hell crafted by a man with ice in his veins.
