Chapter 11 - The Golden Cage Cracks

The federal indictments against the Harringtons sent shockwaves through Chicago’s financial district. By noon, stock in Harrington Logistics had plummeted by forty percent, and television crews crowded the stone steps of the Daley Center. Arthur Harrington’s public facade of untouchable corporate might evaporated overnight under the weight of federal wiretap transcripts and extortion charges.
Inside Vale House, however, the heavy atmosphere of past regrets had finally lifted, replaced by the soft chatter of baby toys and the scent of fresh lavender. Ariana stood by the kitchen window, watching Adrian play with six-month-old Rose on the Persian rug. The fierce, terrifying billionaire who commanded shipping lanes across the Great Lakes was currently flat on his back, cooing softly as his daughter grabbed a fistful of his custom silk tie.
“She has your stubborn streak,” Ariana noted quietly, leaning against the doorframe with a cup of chamomile tea. “She refuses to let go of that tie, just like you refuse to let go of anything once you decide you want it.”
Adrian looked up, his dark eyes softening with an expression he had never shown anyone else in his life. “I spent years collecting things that didn't matter, Ariana. Ships, towers, titles—none of it kept me warm at night. You and Rose are the only things I’ve ever truly earned.”
Before Ariana could reply, Miles Shaw hurried into the kitchen, his tablet glowing in his hand. “Sir, you need to see this. Someone just tried to breach the offshore trust accounts we seized from the Harringtons. Not Arthur, and not Vanessa.”

Adrian’s expression instantly hardened, the ruthless strategist returning to the surface. “Who?”
“Eleanor Vale.”
