Chapter 20 - The True Empire

Five years later, the autumn leaves painted the Michigan countryside in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and crimson.

On the lawn behind the farmhouse, a little girl with dark curls and bright, fearless eyes raced across the grass, chasing a golden retriever while shrieking with laughter.

“Slow down, Rose! You’re going to trip!” Ariana called out, laughing as she sat at a wooden picnic table with a mug of steaming coffee.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her from behind, pulling her close against a warm chest. Adrian rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair just as he had done on the porch years ago.

“She has your energy,” Adrian murmured, smiling as he watched their daughter invent a new game with the dog.

“She has your stubbornness,” Ariana corrected, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. She looked down at his left hand, where the simple gold band still shone brightly against his tanned skin.

“Do you ever miss it?” Ariana asked softly, her eyes searching his. “Chicago? The towers? The power?”

Adrian smiled, leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss to her lips.

“I used to think power was measured by how many people bowed when you entered a room,” Adrian whispered against her mouth. “I was wrong. True power is having everything you ever fought for wrapped in your arms, right here, where no one can ever take it away.”

From the edge of the driveway, Eleanor Vale watched them from the passenger seat of her car, a quiet, satisfied smile resting on her lips as the driver shifted into gear. She didn't need to step out. The dynasty was safe—not because of the steel and shipping lanes they once owned, but because the man who had built an empire from stone had finally learned how to build a home with love.
