Chapter 15 - The Chicago River Warehouse

The rusted iron gates of Pier 42 loomed out of the dark Chicago fog like the skeletal ribs of a forgotten leviathan. The freezing mist rolling off Lake Michigan coated the cobblestones in slick black ice.

Adrian stepped out of his car, his coat flapping in the bitter wind. He carried no weapon this time—only his bare hands and a cold, lethal fury that burned hotter than any fire.

He walked through the gaping entrance of the abandoned shipping warehouse. Towering stacks of rusted shipping containers cast long, monstrous shadows under flickering overhead halogen lights.

“I’m here, Julian!” Adrian’s voice echoed off the corrugated metal walls. “Let them go!”

From the catwalk above, a slow, mocking round of applause echoed down. Julian Vance leaned against the metal railing, a dark smirk playing across his rugged face. In his arms, baby Rose let out a soft, sleepy whimper.

“You always were punctual, Adrian,” Julian called out, descending the metal stairs with slow, deliberate steps. “I have to hand it to you. Most men would have crumpled the moment they realized their empire was slipping away. But you kept coming.”

From the shadows behind a stack of containers, two armed guards shoved Ariana forward. Her wrists were bound with plastic ties, her face pale, but her eyes burned with fierce defiance as she looked at Adrian.

“Don’t do it, Adrian!” Ariana cried out. “It’s a trap! He doesn't want the company—he wants to destroy everything we built!”

“Shut up!” Julian snapped, stepping closer to Ariana and holding baby Rose just a fraction closer to the drop-off of the open loading bay behind them, where the dark, freezing waters of the Chicago River churned thirty feet below.

Adrian’s heart stopped. Every drop of blood in his veins turned to ice. “Step away from them, Julian. If you want the shares, if you want the whole damn company, sign the papers right now. Just don’t touch them.”

Julian laughed, a harsh, hollow sound that echoed off the damp concrete. “Do you really think I care about Vale Logistics shares, Adrian? Your grandfather destroyed my family fifty years ago. He drove my father to a lonely grave while your family sat in high-rise penthouses drinking champagne. I didn't come back to take your money. I came back to take your soul.”
