Chapter 2 - The Harrington Ultimatum

The footsteps clicking against the marble floor of the foyer belonged to a woman accustomed to conquering rooms. Vanessa Harrington wore an emerald silk coat over an outfit designed for a gala that would now never happen. Her diamond earrings caught the chandelier light as she swept into the study without knocking.

“Adrian, darling, what is the meaning of this?” Vanessa’s voice was a honeyed blade. “My father is on the phone with three different board members of the Chicago Tribune. They are holding the morning edition waiting for our engagement confirmation, and your chief of staff is telling them the wedding is off?”

Adrian did not stand up from his desk. He slipped the gold bracelet into his pocket, his hand curling into a fist around the tiny engraved rose.

“The wedding was never going to happen, Vanessa,” Adrian said flatly.

Vanessa’s smile faltered, replaced by a sharp, calculating glint. She stepped closer, letting the scent of expensive French perfume fill the room. “You are exhausted. The stress of the divorce has gotten to you. Ariana was a ghost in this house anyway—a quiet, unremarkable little mouse who didn’t know how to host a dinner party or smile for the cameras. Cutting her loose was the best business decision you ever made. Don't let a moment of sentimental fatigue ruin what we built.”

“Built?” Adrian stood up slowly, towering over her. “We built nothing, Vanessa. You engineered a social merger. You and my mother orchestrated every weekend dinner, every charity gala placement, every whisper in society columns designed to push my wife out of the picture.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed with sudden fury. “And if we did? You wanted ambition, Adrian! You wanted a woman who could stand beside you at a G20 summit, not a girl who bakes bread and cries over poetry books in the garden!”

“She wasn’t just a girl,” Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with a rage Vanessa had never heard before. “She was carrying my child. A daughter you and my mother knew nothing about.”

Vanessa froze. For a second, the polished mask slipped, revealing a calculating terror. “A... what?”

“Get out of my house, Vanessa,” Adrian said, turning his back to her. “If you or your father attempt to interfere with my search, I will dismantle the Harrington shipping contracts piece by piece until your family is begging for scraps on Michigan Avenue.”

As the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, Adrian knew the war had just begun.
