Chapter 12 - The Matriarch’s Counter-Move

The private conference room on the top floor of Vale Tower offered a panoramic view of a rain-swept Chicago skyline. Eleanor Vale sat at the head of the glass table, her posture rigid, her silver hair pinned into an immaculate bun. When the heavy glass doors opened and Adrian walked in with Miles trailing behind him, she did not flinch.

“You’re auditing your own mother’s personal accounts?” Eleanor asked, her voice calm, though her fingers tightened around the handle of her vintage tortoiseshell cane.

“You tried to access the Harrington offshore contingency funds thirty minutes after the arrest warrants were filed,” Adrian stated, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite her without invitation. The air between them crackled with decades of unspoken tension. “Explain why the matriarch of this family was secretly funneling capital to Arthur Harrington’s dummy corporations.”

Eleanor let out a sharp, dry laugh. “You always were too impatient, Adrian. You see the immediate chess move, but you never look three steps ahead. Arthur Harrington was a pawn. A loud, obnoxious pawn who wanted to merge our shipping lines. But someone had to keep the board stable while you were busy losing your mind over a girl and a baby bracelet.”

“A girl who is my wife, and a baby who is your granddaughter,” Adrian snapped, slamming his palm against the glass table. The sound echoed in the empty room. “You knew she was pregnant, Mother. You watched me throw her out into a snowstorm, and you said nothing because you thought a corporate alliance mattered more than blood.”

“Blood?” Eleanor stood up, her eyes blazing with the same fierce intensity that had built their empire from the ashes of the Great Depression. “You think blood is what keeps the Vale name alive? Sentimentality is a disease, Adrian. I didn't tell you about the child because I wanted to see if you had the spine to burn your own world down to find her. If you had stayed with Vanessa, if you had cowered behind your boardroom doors, you wouldn't have deserved to carry this name. But you didn't. You tore down the gates. You became a monster worth fearing again.”

She leaned over the table, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “And now that you’ve won, you think you're safe? Arthur Harrington was just the outer shell. The real threat isn't in a prison cell, Adrian. It’s the silent partner who funded the Harringtons' hostile takeover—someone inside our own inner circle.”
