Chapter 9 - The Final Gambit
Adrian’s phone buzzed in his pocket—the first signal he had received since entering the dead zone of Door County. It was Miles Shaw.
“Sir, we have a major security breach at Vale House,” Miles’s frantic voice crackled through the speaker. “Arthur Harrington mobilized a hostile takeover of the board while you were gone. They’ve frozen our primary accounts, and Vanessa Harrington just went on live television claiming you suffered a mental breakdown and abandoned your company.”
Adrian looked at Ariana, who was holding baby Rose tightly against her chest, her eyes wide with fear not just for herself, but for the man who had finally learned how to love.
“Listen to me very carefully, Miles,” Adrian said, his voice returning to the cold, lethal steel that had made him feared across Chicago. “Activate the emergency offshore contingency protocols under Subsection 9 of the Vale Trust. Freeze every asset the Harrington family holds in our logistics network. And have our private security detail surround Cabin 4 immediately.”
“Done,” Miles replied instantly. “What are your orders regarding Arthur and Vanessa?”
“Tell them I’ll see them in the boardroom at 9:00 AM sharp tomorrow morning,” Adrian said. “And bring the police commissioner with you. We have corporate extortion and domestic terrorism charges to file.”
He hung up and turned back to Ariana. She was looking at him with a mixture of awe and lingering apprehension.
“You don’t have to destroy your empire for us, Adrian,” she whispered. “If the Harringtons want your money, let them take it. We can start over with nothing. We’ve done it before.”

Adrian walked over, gently placing his hands on her shoulders, looking deep into her eyes with a fierce, unwavering devotion.
“My empire was worth nothing until I found the two people who made it matter,” he said softly. “I built this fortune with ruthless ambition, Ariana. But I will burn it all to the ground—every ship, every hotel, every dollar—before I let anyone touch you or our daughter.”
