Chapter 13 - The Silent Partner

Adrian stared at his mother, his mind racing through every board member, investor, and security contractor under the Vale umbrella. “Who?”
“If I knew that, I wouldn't have been trying to drain Arthur's offshore accounts to buy back our voting shares,” Eleanor said, sinking back into her chair with a rare sigh of exhaustion. “Someone has been quietly acquiring Vale Logistics stock through third-party shell companies in Zurich. By next month's shareholder meeting, they will hold thirty-one percent of the company—enough to force a complete liquidation.”
Miles stepped forward, tapping his tablet. “Sir, she’s right. I ran a deep-dive trace on the Zurich accounts. The shell company is registered under a name we haven’t seen in five years.”
Adrian’s breath caught. “Whose?”
“Julian Vance.”
The name hung in the quiet air of the penthouse like a physical blow. Adrian gripped the edge of the glass table so hard his knuckles turned white. Julian Vance—the quiet, rugged lodge owner from Door County who had sheltered Ariana, the man who had punched Adrian in the jaw and handed him the keys to Cabin 4.
“That’s impossible,” Adrian muttered, shaking his head. “Julian lives in a timber cabin in the middle of nowhere. He cuts wood for a living.”
“That’s the cover story,” Eleanor said coldly. “Ten years ago, Julian Vance was Julian Van Der Bilt—the CEO of Van Der Bilt Shipping, our biggest European rival. When our family engineered the hostile merger that bankrupted his father’s company, Julian vanished off the grid. He didn't run away to hide, Adrian. He played a long game. And his final move wasn't about money—it was about taking everything you love.”

Adrian didn’t wait for another word. He turned on his heel, bolted out of the conference room, and ran toward the private elevator.
Ariana.
