Chapter 6 - The Cabin in the Woods

Julian stared at Adrian for a long moment, measuring the genuine agony etched into the younger man's face. Finally, he reached into his pocket and tossed a set of keys onto the reception desk.

“Cabin 4 at Pine Ridge Reserve, two hours north near Door County,” Julian said. “She’s there. But don’t go barging in like a corporate takeover artist, Vale. If you scare that little girl or upset her mother again, I won't just punch back—I’ll make sure you never find your way back to Chicago.”

Adrian didn’t wait for Miles. He grabbed the keys from the desk, ran out into the blinding snow, and threw himself into his car.

The drive north was a white-knuckle nightmare of slick ice, zero visibility, and the relentless ticking of a clock that felt like it was running out. By the time the dark silhouette of Pine Ridge Reserve emerged from the pine forest, dawn was breaking over Lake Michigan, painting the icy horizon in bruised shades of purple and gold.

He found Cabin 4 tucked deep among the snow-laden evergreens. A thin wisp of gray smoke curled from the stone chimney.

Adrian parked the car, his boots crunching loudly in the fresh snow as he walked up the wooden porch steps. His hand hovered over the brass doorknob. For the first time in his life, the billionaire who controlled ports, shipping lanes, and corporate boards was terrified to turn a handle.

He pushed the door open. The interior was warm, smelling of cedarwood, cinnamon tea, and something distinctly sweet and innocent.

And then he heard it.

A soft, gurgling coo coming from a wicker bassinet near the hearth.

Ariana stood by the small kitchen counter, her back to him, stirring something in a copper pot. She wore an oversized wool sweater, her dark hair falling loosely over her shoulders. She looked thinner than he remembered, but there was a quiet, unshakable strength in the way she carried herself.

“Julian, I told you, I don’t need any more firewood—” she began, turning around.

The wooden spoon slipped from her hand, clattering against the floor.
