Chapter 1 - The Burner Phone

Evelyn’s fingers tapped rapidly against her scrub pocket, her expression locked in grim determination. The air inside the cramped storage closet smelled faintly of industrial detergent and powdered baby formula, a sterile scent that did little to calm the rising panic clawing at my throat.

"We need to move fast," Evelyn murmured, pulling a sleek, dark rectangle from the deep pocket of her tunic. It wasn't the hospital-issued pager strapped to her belt, nor was it her personal smartphone. It was a cheap, prepaid burner phone with a cracked upper-right corner. "My cousin works in the ER intake downstairs. I left my personal bag in her locker, but she keeps this old burner in her desk for emergencies when her ex won't stop tracking her. It’s untraceable to us."

My hands shook as I reached out, my fingers brushing against the plastic casing. "Do you have Nina's number?"

"Memorized it from the label I wrote on," Evelyn said, her thumb already pressing the numeric keypad. "If your husband and your mother-in-law have already looped Dr. Harlan’s office into this, they’ve likely locked down your patient profile. Any outgoing calls from your room phone, or even your registered cell phone if they managed to confiscate it completely, will trigger an automated alert to the nursing station console. We have perhaps twenty minutes before someone realizes your room is empty and starts checking the floor layout."

The soft, electronic trill of a call connecting cut through the low hum of the hospital's ventilation shaft. I stared down at little Caleb, still sleeping peacefully under his pale blue blanket, completely oblivious to the fact that a corporate-backed legal coup was currently trying to erase his mother from his birth certificate.

"Pick up, Nina. Please pick up," I whispered, tears hot and heavy against my lower lashes.

On the third ring, a breathless voice answered. "Hello? Evelyn?"

"Nina! It's me. It's Mara."

"Mara? Why are you calling from an unknown number? I’ve been trying to text you all morning, but your messages are failing to deliver, and Adrian isn't answering his phone either. Mom said you were resting after a rough night—"

"Listen to me very carefully," I interrupted, my voice cracking with adrenaline-fueled terror. "Margaret and Adrian are here. In the hospital. They’ve filed emergency psychiatric paperwork through a corrupt doctor. They’re trying to have me declared an unfit mother and transfer custody of Caleb to Adrian before we leave this building."

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the tiny speaker. "What did you just say?"

"They forged progress notes in my chart," I gasped, pressing my back against a stack of boxed bedsheets to keep my legs from buckling. "They're using a single nightmare I had four days ago to claim I'm a danger to myself and the baby. They’re going to force a psychiatric hold, drug me, and push me out of the picture. You need to call Danielle right now. Call her, get in your car, and do not stop driving until you reach the second-floor maternity wing of St. Jude Memorial."

"I’m leaving the house right now," Nina’s voice hardened instantly, shedding every ounce of hesitation. "Don't let them move you out of that room. If anyone tries to touch that baby, scream bloody murder. I'm calling Danielle from the car. We're coming."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Evelyn snatched the phone back, slipping it into her pocket as the heavy metal door of the storage closet rattled. Someone was walking past in the hallway, their shoes squeaking against the linoleum tile just inches away from our hiding spot.
