Chapter 19 - A Mother’s Promise

Later that evening, after putting a thoroughly exhausted and happy one-year-old Caleb to sleep in his crib, I sat by the window watching the stars begin to emerge in the vast night sky. Nina and Evelyn had gone home after a wonderful celebratory dinner filled with laughter and shared memories. I opened the small wooden keepsake box on my desk, gently touching the folded legal documents and the original supply room notes Evelyn had smuggled out of the hospital. Those papers were no longer instruments of terror; they were proof of resilience. I whispered a quiet, fierce promise into the darkened room—that no matter what challenges life brought our way, my son and I would always stand tall, protected by the unyielding strength we had forged together.
