Chapter 6 - The Safehouse

Three hours later, the urban skyline of the city faded into rolling green hills as Nina drove us deep into a quiet, heavily wooded residential suburb forty miles north of the hospital.
We were sitting in the spacious, sunlit living room of Nina’s home. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn tightly across all the windows, casting a warm, amber glow over the room.
Little Caleb was resting peacefully in a portable travel crib set up right beside the sofa, his tiny chest rising and falling in a steady, calming rhythm.
I sat on the couch with a steaming mug of chamomile tea between my hands, though I hadn't taken a single sip. My fingers were still trembling slightly.
"Evelyn is safe," Danielle said, pacing near the fireplace with her phone pressed to her ear. She ended the call and tossed the device onto the coffee table with a satisfied smirk. "She checked into a secure extended-stay hotel on the other side of the county under a temporary protective detail I arranged through my firm. Her hospital badge was deactivated about twenty minutes ago, but she managed to download an encrypted copy of your complete medical file—including the original pre-admission notes before Dr. Harlan's office altered them."
I looked up, my eyes wide. "She got the original chart?"
"Every single word of it," Danielle nodded, sitting down in the armchair opposite me. "The audit trail shows clear digital tampering. Dr. Harlan's office accessed your profile at 2:15 AM last night and inserted the fabricated behavioral-health consultation request without your primary OB-GYN's knowledge or consent. It’s an open-and-shut case of medical forgery and conspiracy."
Nina walked over, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. "You're safe here, Mara. Nobody knows this house. Not Adrian, not Margaret, and certainly not the hospital."
"What happens next?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper as I looked down at my sleeping son. "Can they still try to take him?"
"Not legally," Danielle assured me, her tone firm and unwavering. "By filing our emergency injunction and securing the unaltered medical records, we’ve effectively preempted any custody ambush they had planned for family court. Tomorrow morning, I am filing for an immediate restraining order against Adrian and Margaret, full emergency custody of Caleb, and a formal criminal investigation into the hospital's administrative staff for fraud and conspiracy."
A heavy weight that I hadn't even fully realized I was carrying seemed to lift off my chest. For the first time in four days, I could finally breathe.
Yet, beneath the relief, a cold anger burned deep in my core.
They had tried to destroy me. They had tried to paint me as broken, unstable, and dangerous—all to protect a family name and secure an heir without ever having to deal with the messy complications of a real divorce settlement.
"Adrian tried to call my burner phone three times while we were on the highway," I said quietly, staring into the dark amber liquid of my tea.

"Did you answer?" Nina asked gently.
"No," I replied, setting the mug down on the table. "And I never will again."
