Chapter 12 - The Safehold by the Coast

Three hundred miles away from the cold marble and suffocating tension of the Vale estate, the morning sun poured through the wide bay windows of our coastal cottage. The salty breeze carried the scent of pine and ocean spray, a clean and invigorating atmosphere that felt miles away from the sterile hallways of St. Jude Memorial. I sat at the wooden kitchen island, nursing a warm cup of coffee while little Caleb cooed softly in his portable rocker beside me. The physical scars from my C-section had faded into a faint silver line, but the emotional transformation was complete—I was no longer the frightened, isolated mother who had locked herself in a hospital supply closet. I was a survivor who had taken back her destiny.
Nina bustled through the front door with a stack of fresh groceries, her face flushed with excitement. "You won't believe what Danielle just texted me," she announced, dropping her keys onto the counter with a cheerful clatter. "The Vale legal team just submitted an unconditional surrender. They are dropping all counter-claims, signing over sole physical and legal custody, and transferring the entirety of the financial settlement trust directly to your independent account."
