Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

One month after the nightmare at St. Jude Memorial, the world outside felt entirely different.

We were no longer hiding in a secluded suburban safehouse. Nina, Caleb, and I had permanently relocated to a gorgeous, sun-drenched coastal town three hundred miles away—a place with salt air, endless sandy beaches, and a community where nobody knew our old names or our old scars.

I stood on the wide wooden porch of our new home, a small, charming craftsman cottage surrounded by towering pine trees and vibrant hydrangeas. The morning breeze carried the faint, salty scent of the ocean just over the ridge.

In my arms, Caleb stirred.

He was five weeks old now, growing stronger and heavier by the day. His tiny fingers curled around my thumb with a fierce, unbreakable grip as he let out a soft, contented yawn.

I kissed the top of his soft, dark hair, breathing in the sweet, innocent scent of baby lotion.

"We made it, buddy," I whispered softly to him. "It's just you and me now."

A car door slammed down in the driveway.

I looked up to see Evelyn stepping out of a bright red sedan, carrying a large housewarming plant in her arms, her bright smile radiating pure joy. She had officially resigned from St. Jude Hospital two weeks after the scandal broke, taking up a position as a pediatric care consultant here on the coast, close to us.

Behind her, Nina stepped out of the driver's seat, holding two large cups of coffee and laughing brightly at something Evelyn said.

My heart swelled with a profound, unshakable peace.

They had tried to write a story where I was the victim, where I was weak, broken, and easily discarded. But they had miscalculated. They hadn't counted on the fierce, unyielding roar of a mother protecting her child, nor the unbreakable loyalty of women who refused to let the darkness win.
