Chapter 4 - The Stairwell Ambush

"Run!" Evelyn yelled, shoving the bassinet forward with a burst of athletic energy I never knew she possessed.

I bolted after her, ignoring the burning tear in my lower abdomen as pain shot down my legs. The guard was closing in fast, his heavy breathing audible just a few feet behind my left shoulder.

"Stop right there, ma'am! Hands behind your back!" the guard bellowed, reaching out a massive hand to grab the metal frame of the bassinet.

Before his fingers could wrap around the handle, a heavy metal service door to our right violently swung inward, slamming directly into the guard's shoulder with a sickening thud.

"Get your hands off my sister!"

Nina lunged through the doorway, her hair disheveled, her face flushed with pure, unadulterated rage. Right behind her stood Danielle, a tall, impeccably dressed woman in a sharp charcoal blazer whose fierce expression could have melted steel.

The security guard stumbled backward, clutching his bruised shoulder with a curse.

Adrian skidded to a halt a few yards away, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief as he saw Nina and Danielle blocking the corridor.

"Nina? What the hell are you doing here?" Adrian stammered, his facade of concerned husband instantly cracking under the weight of being caught red-handed. "This is a private medical matter—you have no right to interfere—"

"Private medical matter?" Danielle stepped forward, her voice cutting through the corridor like a razor-sharp scalpel. She pulled a thick leather folio from under her arm, flipping it open to reveal a series of legal documents stamped with emergency injunction seals. "My name is Danielle Vance. I am Mara’s retained legal counsel. Under state family code section 402, any attempt to execute an involuntary psychiatric hold without an independent judicial review or mandatory in-person psychiatric evaluation constitutes unlawful detainment and custodial kidnapping."

Adrian’s face drained of all color. "That's... that's absurd. Dr. Harlan signed off on—"

"Dr. Harlan hasn't seen my client once," Danielle interrupted smoothly, stepping right up to Adrian's face and holding up her phone, which was currently recording video with audio backup synced to a cloud server. "Which means every single signature on that emergency transfer form is an act of felony medical fraud. I suggest you step aside right now, Mr. Vale, because the moment we walk out those doors into the municipal parking lot, every local news outlet in the state is going to get a copy of this file."

"Adrian! Don't just stand there letting them bully you!"

Margaret Vale rounded the corner from the main intersection, her tailored beige pantsuit looking shockingly out of place in the grimy utility hallway. Her eyes flashed with venom as she glared at Nina and me. "That young woman is mentally unstable! She’s a danger to my grandson! Security, remove these intruders immediately!"

"Touch us, and you'll spend the next ten years defending your medical license in federal court," Evelyn snapped, stepping in front of the bassinet with her hospital badge held up high. "I am a registered charge nurse on this floor. I have personally logged every single irregularity in Mrs. Vale's chart, including the unauthorized administrative tampering that occurred at 3:00 AM this morning. I am officially acting as a whistle-blower under state health protection laws."

Margaret turned her icy glare toward Evelyn, her lips thinning into a vicious line. "You'll lose your license by the end of the day, nurse. You have no idea who you're messing with."

"Try me," Evelyn replied coldly.
