Margaret and Adrian vanished from the social registers, their family real estate empire fractured by massive legal fees, federal audits, and public disgrace. I never heard from Adrian again, and the courts ensured he never possessed the legal leverage to disrupt our lives again.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, I sat on a bench overlooking the endless blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
Caleb, now nearly seven months old, sat proudly on my lap, babbling happily at a flock of seagulls wheeling overhead in the bright sky. He reached out with both hands, trying to catch the salty wind, his bright, curious eyes full of life and untamed potential.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a text from Evelyn: Beach picnic at 5 PM. Bring the baby and your appetite. We're celebrating six months of absolute freedom.
I smiled, typing back a quick confirmation before slipping the phone back into my jacket pocket.
