CHAPTER 1: The Last Wish No One Was Ready to Hear

Every evening at exactly six o'clock, eighty-three-year-old Walter Hayes sat alone on the creaking porch of his weathered farmhouse, sipping cold coffee while staring down the empty dirt road.

For forty years, he had waited.

Not for visitors.

Not for neighbors.

For the son who had disappeared without saying goodbye.

Everyone in the small town believed Walter had been abandoned because he was a stubborn old man. They whispered that his son had started a new life somewhere far away and simply forgot him.

Walter never defended himself.

Because the truth hurt far more than the rumors.

Every sunset reminded him of the last argument they ever had.

"I don't need you anymore, Dad."

Those were the final words his son had spoken before driving away.

Walter never saw him again.

Years passed.

His wife died.

Friends disappeared one by one.

The farmhouse became silent... except for the rocking chair that never stopped moving.

Then, on an ordinary autumn evening, an old blue pickup slowly rolled into his driveway.

A young man, no older than twenty-five, stepped out holding a sleeping baby wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

Walter frowned.

"I think you're at the wrong house."

The stranger shook his head.

"No, sir..."

"I've been looking for you for three years."

Walter's hands began to tremble.

"I believe..."

"...this is your granddaughter."

The coffee mug slipped from Walter's fingers and shattered across the porch.

His heart stopped.

Because his son had never told anyone he even had a child.

The young man slowly reached into his jacket and pulled out an old leather envelope.

"I promised someone I'd only give this to you."

Walter recognized the handwriting before he even opened it.

It belonged to his son.

The man he believed had abandoned him forever.

But what the letter revealed...

...would destroy everything Walter thought he knew.
