CHAPTER 5: The Woman Everyone Thought Was Dead

The room fell silent.

Walter's heartbeat thundered in his ears as he stared at Mrs. Bell.

"What... what did you just say?"

She looked down at little Lily, who was sleeping peacefully in Walter's arms, completely unaware that her life had just changed forever.

"I said," Mrs. Bell repeated slowly, "Lily's mother is still alive."

Daniel stepped backward in disbelief.

"That's impossible."

"I buried her."

Mrs. Bell shook her head.

"No."

"You buried another woman."

Everyone froze.

Sheriff Nolan's confident smile vanished.

For the first time in decades... fear appeared on his face.

Mrs. Bell pulled a thick envelope from her coat.

Inside were photographs, hospital records, witness statements, and one passport under another name.

"Your son planned everything before he died," she said.

"He knew they would hunt anyone connected to the evidence."

"So he asked us to fake Emily's death."

Walter gasped.

"Emily..."

He remembered her.

The quiet young woman who had once visited the farmhouse, always smiling, always bringing homemade pie. His son had introduced her only as "a friend."

She had been carrying his granddaughter the entire time.

Mrs. Bell continued.

"For forty years, Emily lived under federal protection."

"She gave up her name."

"Her family."

"Her entire life..."

"...to keep Lily alive."

Daniel whispered,

"Then why now?"

Mrs. Bell looked toward the shattered window.

"Because someone betrayed the program."

The sheriff suddenly laughed.

A slow...

Cold...

Terrifying laugh.

"You think you've already won?"

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small phone.

He pressed one button.

Three seconds later...

The farmhouse exploded with the sound of tires outside.

Not two SUVs.

Not three.

More than a dozen.

Black vehicles surrounded every exit.

Armed men poured into the yard from every direction.

Walter instinctively shielded Lily.

The sheriff smiled wider.

"You've opened the chest."

"You found the tape."

"But you never asked yourselves one question..."

Mrs. Bell narrowed her eyes.

"What question?"

The sheriff leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Who told us where the chest was?"

Silence filled the room.

Every pair of eyes slowly turned...

...toward Daniel.

His face had gone completely pale.

"I..."

"I swear..."

"I didn't tell anyone."

But before he could finish...

A sniper's laser sight appeared on his chest.

Then another...

Then another.

Someone outside shouted through a loudspeaker.

May you like

"Bring us the baby..."

"...or everyone inside dies."
