CHAPTER 9: The Final Betrayal

Emily's voice cut through the smoke.

"Don't trust anyone."

Walter looked at her in confusion.

"What do you mean?"

Emily's eyes filled with tears as she glanced toward the federal agents surrounding the farmhouse.

"They're not all here to protect us."

Mrs. Bell slowly lowered her weapon.

She already knew.

Daniel frowned.

"Who are you talking about?"

Emily pointed toward the commander of the Federal Tactical Unit.

A tall man named Director Marcus Hale.

"He isn't here to arrest Nolan."

"He's here to erase every piece of evidence."

Silence.

Then Marcus slowly began to clap.

"Very impressive, Emily."

"I always wondered how long you'd survive."

Every federal agent standing behind him suddenly raised their rifles—not at Nolan...

But at Walter.

Sheriff Nolan burst into laughter.

"You fools."

"You spent forty years chasing the wrong villain."

"I was never the man in charge."

Marcus stepped forward with a calm smile.

"Nolan worked for me."

"My father built this organization."

"I simply inherited it."

Walter felt sick.

Everything they had fought for...

Every sacrifice...

Had only scratched the surface.

Marcus extended his hand.

"Give me the journal."

"And I'll let the baby live."

Walter looked down at Lily.

She smiled innocently, reaching for his weathered beard.

He realized something in that moment.

This had never been about power.

It had never been about money.

It had always been about protecting one child from inheriting a lifetime of fear.

Walter slowly handed Marcus the journal.

Marcus smiled.

"You finally made the right choice."

Then Walter whispered...

"Not quite."

He pulled a small lighter from his pocket.

Before anyone could react...

He set the journal on fire.

Flames consumed decades of secrets.

Marcus screamed.

"No!"

The billionaire conspiracy's greatest treasure disappeared in seconds.

But Walter smiled through his tears.

"Some truths belong to history."

"You don't deserve them."

Marcus pulled his pistol.

He aimed directly at Walter's heart.

A gunshot echoed across the farm.

Walter closed his eyes...

Waiting for the pain.

But it never came.

Someone else had stepped in front of him.

Daniel.

The young veteran collapsed onto the ground, blood spreading across his shirt.

With his final breath, he smiled.

"I promised Ethan..."

May you like

"...I'd bring his family home."

His eyes closed forever.
