CHAPTER 3: The Chest Beneath the Floor

Walter tore up the loose floorboard with shaking hands.
Underneath sat the old wooden chestâcovered in dust, locked for forty years.
The tiny silver key fit perfectly.
Inside was not money.
Not jewelry.
But photographs, newspaper clippings, military documents⊠and a small cassette tape labeled:
âFOR MY FATHER â IF I DONâT COME BACK.â
Walter pressed play.
His sonâs voice filled the room.
âDad⊠I didnât leave because I hated you. I left because they promised to kill you if I stayed.â
Walter collapsed into the chair.
His son revealed everything: the mayor, the sheriff, and a wealthy businessman had been using soldiers to move illegal money overseas.
When Walterâs son discovered it, they framed him as a deserter and erased his name.
Then his voice broke.
âBut I found something bigger. Lilyâs mother knew the truth too⊠and they came for her.â
Danielâs face went pale.
