CHAPTER 4: The Men Who Came Back

The porch lights flickered as three men stepped out of the SUVs.

At the front stood Sheriff Nolan Graves—older now, but still wearing the same cruel smile Walter remembered from forty years ago.

“Evening, Walter,” the sheriff said.

Walter held Lily tighter.

“You knew,” Walter whispered. “You knew my son was innocent.”

The sheriff smiled.

“Your son should’ve stayed dead in people’s memories.”

Daniel moved in front of Walter.

But the sheriff raised his gun.

“No hero speeches tonight.”

Then a voice came from the dark hallway.

“Put the gun down, Nolan.”

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stepped forward—Walter’s former neighbor, Mrs. Bell.

But she wasn’t just a neighbor.

She pulled out a federal badge.

“I’ve waited forty years for you to come back for that tape.”

The sheriff’s smile vanished.

Walter stared at her in shock.

Mrs. Bell looked at him and said:

“Your son didn’t die running, Walter.”

“He died protecting the witness who could destroy them.”

Then she pointed at baby Lily.

“And that witness
 is her mother.”
