CHAPTER 6: The Man Who Betrayed Them
Daniel slowly raised both hands.
"I didn't tell them."
His voice cracked with fear.
"I swear on Ethan's life... I didn't."
Outside, the armed men tightened their circle around the farmhouse. Red laser sights danced across every window.
Walter held Lily close against his chest.
The little girl began to cry.
Sheriff Nolan smiled.
"Time's running out, old man."
"Hand us the child."
"No one else has to die."
Mrs. Bell quietly reached beneath an old cabinet and pulled out a dusty shotgun.
"I've waited forty years for this day."
"If they're coming in..."
"They're not walking back out."
The first bullet shattered the front window.
Glass exploded across the living room.
Daniel pushed Walter and Lily behind the fireplace just as another volley ripped through the walls.
The farmhouse became a battlefield.
Wood splintered.
Furniture collapsed.
Smoke filled the air.
Walter looked at Daniel.
"If you didn't betray us..."
"...who did?"
Daniel suddenly remembered something.
The envelope.
When he had picked it up from the federal archive two days earlier, a janitor had accidentally bumped into him.
The man's cart had overturned.
Papers scattered everywhere.
At the time, it seemed harmless.
Now Daniel realized...
The janitor had secretly photographed the address written on the envelope.
"Oh my God..."
"It wasn't me."
"It was the archive."
Mrs. Bell's expression froze.
"There was a leak."
Before anyone could react, a deafening explosion blasted open the back wall.
Masked men stormed inside.
Walter thought it was over.
Then—
Three black helicopters roared across the night sky.
Bright searchlights flooded the property.
Loudspeakers echoed through the valley.
"Federal Tactical Unit!"
"Drop your weapons immediately!"
The attackers froze.
Sheriff Nolan's confident smile disappeared for the first time.
But instead of surrendering...
He laughed.
A deep, unsettling laugh.
"You still don't understand."
He slowly turned toward Walter.
"You think this was about the tape?"
"No."
"You think it was about the witnesses?"
"No."
He pointed directly at Lily.
"That little girl is worth more than every document in that chest."
Walter stared at him in disbelief.
"What are you talking about?"
Nolan's eyes narrowed.
"Because Lily isn't just Ethan's daughter..."
"...she is the legal heir to something hidden over forty years ago."
Mrs. Bell whispered,
"No..."
"He found out."
Nolan smiled one last time.
"By sunrise..."
"Half the country will be looking for that child."
