CHAPTER 2: A Letter Written From Beyond Hope
Walter's hands shook so violently he could barely unfold the faded letter.
The ink had begun to fade, but every word cut deeper than the last.
"Dad...
If you're reading this, it means I ran out of time."
Walter froze.
His breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"No... this can't be."
The young man lowered his eyes.
"My name is Daniel."
"I served with your son overseas."
Walter slowly looked up.
"Overseas?"
Daniel nodded.
"He never abandoned you."
"He was protecting you."
Walter stared in disbelief.
For decades he had believed his son chose another life over his own father.
But Daniel continued.
"Your son uncovered corruption involving people powerful enough to destroy anyone connected to him."
"They threatened you."
"So he disappeared..."
"...to keep you alive."
Walter felt the world collapse beneath him.
Every birthday...
Every Christmas...
Every lonely night...
His son had been suffering in silence.
Daniel carefully placed the sleeping baby into Walter's trembling arms.
"Her name is Lily."
"She's all he had left."
Walter looked down at the tiny face sleeping peacefully against the blue blanket.
For the first time in forty years...
He saw his son's eyes again.
Tears streamed down the old man's weathered face.
"I should've trusted him..."
Daniel swallowed hard.
"There's one more thing."
He reached into the baby's blanket and removed a tiny silver key tied with a faded ribbon.
Walter immediately recognized it.
It was the spare key to an old wooden chest hidden beneath the floorboards of the farmhouse.
A chest Walter hadn't opened since the day his son disappeared.
Daniel whispered,
"He said..."
"If anyone ever finds the key..."
"...tell my father the truth is waiting inside."
Walter slowly turned toward the old house.
He suddenly realized...
His son hadn't left him an inheritance.
