Chapter 11 - The Inheritance Restored

The federal auditors worked with surgical precision, combing through the digital ruins of Vance & Sterling like forensic pathologists at a crime scene. Two weeks after the chaotic wedding that shocked Chicago’s elite, the courts formally issued a restitution order that completely dismantled Ryan’s financial empire.

Every single penny siphoned from the Carter Family Trust—amounting to nearly four million dollars—was frozen, seized, and transferred back to its rightful owner. My grandmother’s legacy, built on decades of hard work and quiet dignity, was no longer exposed to the greedy hands of men like Julian Vance and cowards like Ryan.

My attorney, Sarah, sat across from me in my sunlit living room, sliding a final, thick binder across the marble coffee table.

“It’s official,” Sarah said, her eyes bright with professional satisfaction. “The probate court has officially reinstated the trust under your sole, unencumbered management. Furthermore, because of the fraud statutes violated, the court awarded punitive damages that effectively strip Ryan of his remaining personal assets. His townhome, his luxury cars, his investment portfolios—everything has been liquidated to pay back creditors and victims.”

I looked down at the documents, tracing my finger over my maiden name typed cleanly at the top of the page. No hyphenated compromise. No association with the Brooks family name.

“And Ryan?” I asked, my voice calm, completely devoid of the tremor that used to accompany even the mention of his name.

“He’s currently being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown,” Sarah replied, folding her hands. “His defense counsel tried to cut a deal, but with federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges stacking up against him and Julian, the prosecutors aren't blinking. He’s looking at a minimum of ten to twelve years.”

I nodded slowly, leaning back against the plush cushions of the sofa. In the nursery down the hall, I heard a soft, contented coo from Chloe.

“Let him sit with it,” I whispered. “He spent years telling me I was the one who was broken. Now he has all the time in the world to realize who the real architect of his destruction was.”
