Chapter 2 - The Groom’s TriumphUp at the altar, Ryan looked every bit the master of the universe. He stood tall in his midnight-blue Tom Ford tuxedo, his posture radiating that arrogant, effortless self-assurance that used to make me feel small. Beside him stood his best man, Julian Vance—Ryan’s senior partner at Vance & Sterling Wealth Management, and the man whose signature I had just discovered buried at the very bottom of my financial audit.

The whispers rippled through the front rows as Lauren made her entrance.

She was breathtaking, draped in a custom Vera Wang gown encrusted with pearls, her blonde hair swept into an intricate, cascading chignon. As she glided down the aisle, her hand resting gracefully on her subtly rounded belly, she looked like the textbook definition of a triumphant victor. She cast a brief, predatory glance toward the empty seats near the front—the seats Ryan had no doubt reserved to watch me squirm.

She didn't see me standing quietly in the dim, vaulted rear of the hall.

The officiant, a distinguished older man with a booming baritone, cleared his throat and began the traditional liturgy. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the union of Ryan James Brooks and Lauren Michelle Hayes...”

Every word felt like a deliberate insult hurled across the chasms of my memory. I remembered the nights Ryan stood in our kitchen, slamming his fist against the marble counter, shouting that my body was a defective machine, that my miscarriages were a punishment for my lack of "inner strength." I remembered the cold, clinical chill of the fertility clinic where doctors looked at me with pity while Ryan checked his watch, annoyed that my medical appointments were cutting into his golf game.

And now, here he was, marrying the woman who had helped him hollow out my grandmother’s legacy, basking in the applause of the very people who had whispered behind my back about my supposed infertility.

“If anyone here present knows any reason why these two should not be lawfully joined together,” the officiant proclaimed, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers, “let them speak now or forever hold their peace.”

The traditional pause settled over the room. A heavy, expectant hush.

This was my cue.
