Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist“You thought you had total control, didn't you?” I said, stepping right up to the base of the altar, towering over both Ryan and his disgraced bride. “You thought you could break me down, strip me of my dignity, steal my inheritance, and leave me with nothing.”

Ryan looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot, hatred and fear warring openly in his expression. “You’re insane! You ruined my life! You ruined everything!”

“I didn't ruin anything, Ryan,” I said softly. “I just brought the receipts.”

I reached back into the leather folder and pulled out the final document—the one neither Ryan, nor Julian, nor Lauren had anticipated in their worst nightmares.

“You spent months telling everyone that I couldn't give you a family,” I continued, my voice ringing clear and steady through the cathedral. “You told the divorce court that I was incapable of bearing children. You told your mother that my body was broken.”

I held up the court-certified document, letting the official seal catch the light of the crystal chandeliers.

“This is a DNA test. 99.99% probability of paternity.”

Ryan blinked, his brain struggling to process the words through the haze of shock and adrenaline. “What... what are you talking about? Paternity for whom?”

“For your daughter, Ryan,” I said, a cold, triumphant smile finally touching my lips. “Born thirty-six hours ago at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Healthy. Perfect. And carrying your exact DNA.”

The color drained completely from Ryan’s face, leaving him chalk-white. He gripped the altar rail so hard his knuckles turned translucent.

“No,” he choked out, shaking his head frantically. “No, that’s impossible. You weren't... you couldn't—”

“I discovered I was pregnant just four days before our divorce papers were signed,” I said, cutting him off cleanly. “I didn't tell you because I knew you would weaponize my child the way you weaponized everything else. I didn't want my daughter growing up in a house built on lies, greed, and abuse. So I vanished.”

I let the weight of the words hang in the heavy air.

“She has your eyes, Ryan. And she has my last name. Carter. Not Brooks.”
