Chapter 20 - The Unbroken LegacyThe sun crested the Chicago skyline on a crisp, golden morning exactly two years after the day my life changed forever.

I stood on the balcony of the penthouse, holding a steaming cup of coffee in one hand while Chloe—now a chatterbox toddler clutching a stuffed rabbit—chattered happily beside me, pointing at the seagulls wheeling over the lake.

Down below, the city moved at its usual breakneck pace, a relentless engine of ambition, success, and human drama. Somewhere down in a maximum-security federal facility, Ryan Brooks was waking up to another gray, regimented day behind concrete walls—a prisoner of his own greed, stripped of the wealth, the status, and the arrogance he once thought made him invincible.

He had tried to humiliate me by inviting me to watch him celebrate his supposed triumph. Instead, he had walked into his own executioner's courtroom, handing me the keys to his entire destruction and the foundation of my absolute freedom.

I knelt down, pulling Chloe gently into a warm, protective embrace, breathing in the sweet scent of baby shampoo and fresh morning air.

“We won, little one,” I whispered softly against her dark curls. “We won everything.”

She giggled, wrapping her tiny arms around my neck and planting a messy, enthusiastic kiss on my cheek.

The past was dead and buried, locked away where it belonged. The future was wide open, written entirely in our own name, and no one would ever have the power to write over it again.
