Chapter 3 - Stepping Into the LightI didn't wait for the music to resume.

With a slow, deliberate cadence, I stepped out from the shadows of the rear gallery and began walking down the central aisle. The polished mahogany floor clicked sharply beneath the heels of my boots—a sound that cut through the silence like a starting pistol.
Heads began to turn. Necks craned. Whispers broke out like static electricity rippling through a dry room.
“Who is that?” someone hissed from the third row.
“Isn’t that...?” another voice murmured, trailing off as recognition set in.
Ryan stopped scanning the crowd for his bride’s arrival, his eyes snapping toward the center aisle. His easy, triumphant smile froze, fracturing instantly into a mask of pure, unadulterated confusion. Beside him, Lauren’s hand flew to her pearls, her breath catching in her throat as she locked eyes with me.
I kept walking, my pace steady, my eyes locked entirely on Ryan’s face. I watched the color drain from his cheeks, replaced by a sudden, frantic flush of humiliation and rage. He took half a step forward from the altar, as if he wanted to physically intercept me before I reached the front row.
“Mia?” his voice rasped out, loud enough to carry through the sound system’s lapel mic. “What the hell are you doing here?”
I stopped ten feet from the altar, right beside the towering floral arrangements. The string quartet stopped playing entirely, the cellist’s bow hovering awkwardly above the strings.
“You invited me, Ryan,” I said, my voice cutting through the cavernous silence with absolute, chilling clarity. “You said you wanted me to see what a real family looks like. I didn’t want to disappoint you.”
Ryan’s face twisted into an ugly snarl, his veneer of corporate polish cracking completely. “Security! Get this lunatic out of here right now! She’s trespassing!”

Before the guards could move from the doors, I raised my right hand, holding up the thick, leather-bound folder so the entire congregation could see it.
“You might want to hear what’s inside this first, Ryan,” I said softly. “Especially since it concerns your new bride... and your company’s newest silent partner.”
