Chapter 8 - The AftermathThe federal investigation moved with terrifying speed.

Within forty-eight hours, the offices of Vance & Sterling were raided, servers seized, and asset-freezing orders slapped on every personal and corporate account associated with Ryan and Julian. The millions they had funneled out of the Carter Family Trust were tracked directly to shell companies and hidden luxury assets, guaranteeing decades behind bars for Julian and severe criminal indictments for corporate fraud and conspiracy for Ryan.

Lauren’s pregnancy, it turned out, was the least of her legal worries. As a co-conspirator in the embezzlement scheme, she faced federal conspiracy charges that carried up to fifteen years in federal prison. The fairy-tale wedding had transformed instantly into a pre-trial holding cell.

I sat in the sunlit recovery room of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, watching little Chloe sleep peacefully in her bassinet.

The door clicked open, and my attorney, a sharp, formidable woman named Sarah Vance (no relation to the disgraced Julian), stepped into the room holding a thick stack of finalized legal documents.

“It’s done, Mia,” Sarah said, a genuine smile breaking across her professional demeanor. “The emergency injunction was granted this morning. All remaining assets of Vance & Sterling have been seized as restitution. The court has restored the entirety of your grandmother’s trust, plus punitive damages.”

She set the papers on the bedside table, then looked over at the sleeping infant. “And as for custody and paternity? Ryan’s legal team didn't even contest it. Given the pending federal indictments and the DNA verification, he signed away all parental rights this morning in exchange for a slightly reduced plea recommendation.”

I let out a long, slow breath—a breath I felt like I hadn't truly taken in four long years.
