Chapter 16 - New HorizonsWith the legal battles permanently behind us, my focus shifted entirely toward the future.

My boutique consulting firm was thriving far beyond my initial projections. Word had quietly spread among Chicago’s wealth management circles about the woman who had single-handedly uncovered a multi-million-dollar internal embezzlement ring and legally dismantled the perpetrators. High-net-worth individuals, particularly women who had been sidelined or financially manipulated by controlling spouses, sought out my services to protect their personal estates and family inheritances.

I wasn't just managing money; I was building an armor for others the way I wished I had built one for myself years ago.

One afternoon, while reviewing a complex trust document in my home office, my phone rang. It was an unfamiliar local number with a downtown Chicago area code.

I hesitated for a second before swiping to answer.

“Hello? This is Mia Carter.”

“Ms. Carter? Hi, my name is Detective Miller with the Chicago Police Department’s financial crimes division,” a calm, professional voice stated. “I’m calling regarding an inquiry made by an incarcerated individual under the name Ryan Brooks.”

My fingers froze over the keyboard. “Go on.”

“He recently filed a formal petition seeking supervised visitation rights with your minor child, citing parental precedent under state guidelines,” the detective continued smoothly. “Given his current federal inmate status and the permanent waiver of parental rights he signed during his plea negotiations, the petition was summarily denied by the family court judge this morning at 9:00 AM. I’m simply calling to notify you as a matter of standard protocol so you’re aware.”

A quiet, almost ironic smile touched the corners of my lips.

“Thank you, Detective,” I replied evenly. “I appreciate the update.”

“You’re very welcome, Ms. Carter. Have a wonderful afternoon.”

The call disconnected with a soft click.

Ryan was still grasping at straws from behind gray walls, refusing to accept that his actions had permanent, irreversible consequences. But his desperation couldn't touch us anymore. The law had spoken, the documents were airtight, and our lives moved forward entirely on our own terms.
