Chapter 9 - The New DawnThree weeks later, the crisp autumn air of Chicago carried the crisp scent of lake water and a profound sense of absolute freedom.

I stood on the balcony of my penthouse apartment—purchased legitimately with the recovered trust funds—looking out over the breathtaking expanse of Lake Michigan. In the nursery just behind me, Chloe stirred softly, her tiny chest rising and falling in a rhythm of pure, unblemished peace.
Ryan was currently sitting in a federal holding facility awaiting trial, stripped of his wealth, his prestige, and his freedom. His mother had tried calling me twice, begging for visitation rights with her granddaughter, but her numbers were blocked permanently. I had nothing left to say to people who measured human worth in bank balances and emotional cruelty.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
It was a text from an unknown number. I opened it out of sheer curiosity.
It was a scanned copy of a handwritten letter, penned on cheap yellow legal paper from the county jail.
“Mia, please. I was wrong about everything. Lauren lied to me. Julian trapped me. I never meant to hurt you. Please let me see my daughter. Please give me one more chance.”
I stared at the words for three long seconds.
There was no anger left in my chest. No bitterness. Not even satisfaction. There was simply nothing at all—just the profound, beautiful emptiness where Ryan’s shadow used to live.

I didn't reply.
Instead, I selected the icon, blocked the number, and deleted the message forever.
