Chapter 1 – The Doctor Who Refused to Let Go
The emergency room exploded into chaos just after midnight.
Paramedics burst through the doors pushing an unconscious elderly man whose heartbeat was fading by the second. Every monitor screamed danger. His blood pressure was collapsing. His lungs had nearly stopped working.
"Male, approximately seventy-eight. Massive cardiac arrest. No identification. Found alone!" a paramedic shouted.
Most of the staff exchanged uneasy glances.
Another anonymous patient.
Another life slipping away.
Dr. Ethan Carter didn't hesitate.
"Charge to 200. Start compressions. Nobody gives up!"
The young trauma physician threw himself onto the patient's chest, counting every compression while sweat soaked through his blue scrubs. Nurses rushed medication. Respiratory therapists forced oxygen into failing lungs.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Fifteen minutes.
The heartbeat kept disappearing.
One nurse quietly leaned closer.
"Doctor... we've done everything."
Ethan shook his head.
"No. He's still fighting."
The room fell silent.
Something about the old man's face felt strangely familiar.
A scar above his eyebrow.
A faded silver ring.
A weathered pair of hands that looked as if they had spent a lifetime protecting someone.
Ethan couldn't explain why, but walking away suddenly felt impossible.
Twenty-five minutes passed.
Another shock.
Nothing.
Thirty-two minutes.
Another round of CPR.
Still nothing.
Several doctors had already left the room, convinced the case was over.
Only Ethan remained beside the dying stranger.
His arms were burning.
His shoulders trembled from exhaustion.
But every time someone suggested calling the official time of death, he answered with the same words.
"One more minute."
Then another.
And another.
Forty-seven minutes after the patient had technically been declared beyond hope...
The monitor suddenly beeped.
One heartbeat.
Then another.
Then a steady rhythm filled the room.
Everyone froze.
The impossible had happened.
The old man was alive.
As nurses rushed to stabilize him, Ethan finally collapsed into a nearby chair, breathing harder than he ever had in his life.
