CHAPTER 2 — THE TOAST THAT ENDED A MARRIAGE

The laughter inside Morrow House slowly faded.
Not because the music stopped.
Because every person near the entrance suddenly looked toward the door.
Three men.
Broad shoulders.
Calm faces.
Purposeful steps.
Caleb.
Dylan.
Luke Whitaker.
The Whitaker brothers had once been famous in Boston for very different reasons.
Caleb had spent twelve years leading military rescue operations overseas.
Luke was one of the state's toughest prosecutors.
Dylan rarely appeared in newspapers...
Because builders who solved problems quietly never did.
Grant immediately recognized them.
His smile disappeared.
Madison leaned closer.
"Friends of yours?"
"No."
Grant stood.
"What are you doing here?"
Caleb ignored the question.
Instead...
He placed a sealed evidence bag on the white tablecloth.
Inside...
Grant's wedding ring.
Madison frowned.
Grant's face turned pale.
"What is this?"
Caleb answered softly.
"You forgot something."
Grant laughed nervously.
"It's just a ring."
"No."
Luke finally spoke.
"It's evidence."
The surrounding diners had stopped eating.
Phones slowly appeared.
Someone began recording.
Grant lowered his voice.
"Let's discuss this privately."
"No."
Caleb looked him directly in the eyes.
"You left your thirty-three-week pregnant wife unconscious."
"You locked the front door from the outside."
"You ignored twelve emergency calls."
"You sent one text."
Luke opened the first black folder.
Every page was numbered.
Time-stamped.
Phone records.
Security camera images.
GPS history.
Restaurant reservations.
Bank transactions.
Everything.
Grant stared in disbelief.
"How did you—"
"You underestimated her family."
Luke interrupted.
"We don't argue."
"We document."
Madison suddenly stood.
"I had nothing to do with this."
Dylan slowly placed another photograph onto the table.
Madison's smile vanished.
It showed her entering Grant's house that afternoon.
The timestamp...
Three hours before Emma collapsed.
Another photo.
Madison leaving through the back gate carrying an overnight bag.
Another.
Grant locking the front door.
Another.
Emma's first emergency call.
Ignored.
The restaurant had become completely silent.
Even the pianist stopped playing.
Grant looked around desperately.
"This isn't what it looks like."
Caleb took one slow step closer.
"No."
"It's worse."
Grant's phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?"
Dr. Lillian Mercer spoke calmly.
"Mr. Whitaker..."
"Your wife survived emergency surgery."
Grant exhaled in relief.
"But..."
The doctor continued.
"Your daughter was delivered prematurely."
"She is alive."
Grant closed his eyes.
"Thank God."
The doctor's next sentence shattered him.
"Mrs. Whitaker has instructed hospital staff, security, and legal counsel that you are not permitted anywhere near her or the baby."
Click.
The line went dead.
Grant looked up.
His brothers-in-law hadn't moved.
Luke slowly slid one final envelope across the table.
"What is this?"
Grant whispered.
Luke answered.
"Temporary restraining order."
Caleb smiled for the first time that night.
It wasn't a happy smile.
It was the smile of a man who had finally stopped holding back.
"You abandoned your wife."
"You nearly killed your child."
"And now..."
He glanced toward dozens of phones recording everything.
"...your real nightmare begins."
At that exact moment...
The massive television above the wine bar switched to breaking news.
Grant Whitaker's company logo filled the screen.
Then one headline appeared in bold letters.
WHITAKER INDUSTRIES BOARD CALLS EMERGENCY MEETING AFTER CEO SCANDAL.
Grant's knees nearly gave out.
May you like
He still didn't know...
The worst evidence hadn't even been opened yet.
