CHAPTER 9 — THE SECRET LEDGER

The discovery of the storage locker changed everything.
By sunrise, federal investigators had sealed the building.
Inside were shelves packed with labeled boxes, encrypted hard drives, financial ledgers, burner phones, and carefully organized files.
One detective stared at the evidence and quietly said,
"This wasn't an affair..."
"It was a business."
Each folder contained the name of a wealthy businessman.
Next to each name was a wife.
Beside every wife was a handwritten note.
Insurance. Assets. Timeline. Weaknesses.
Grant and Madison had allegedly studied their targets for years.
Emma's folder was the thickest of them all.
Inside were copies of her medical records, photos of her prenatal appointments, maps of her daily routine, and notes about her high-risk pregnancy.
One page made every investigator stop.
In Grant's handwriting were the words:
"No divorce. Too expensive."
Beneath it...
"Natural complications are impossible to prove."
The room fell silent.
Detectives immediately obtained additional warrants.
Within hours, investigators contacted the three women whose names appeared in the files.
Each of them described strange "accidents" over the previous two years.
One had nearly drowned after a yacht mysteriously lost power.
Another had fallen down a staircase after the handrail had been loosened.
A third survived a gas leak that investigators had once ruled accidental.
Now...
Every case was reopened.
Grant's empire wasn't just collapsing.
It was exposing a network of calculated deception that stretched back years.
Meanwhile, Madison Vale believed she still had one chance.
Using a fake passport from the storage locker, she drove toward a private airfield before dawn.
A charter jet waited with its engines running.
She smiled for the first time in days.
"I'm finally getting out."
She climbed the stairs.
The cabin door opened.
Two passengers were already seated.
They weren't pilots.
They were federal agents.
One calmly held up the fake passport.
"We've been waiting for you."
Madison froze.
She slowly turned to run.
Behind her stood Caleb, Dylan, and Luke.
None of them smiled.
Caleb spoke quietly.
"My sister almost died because of you."
Madison whispered,
"I never touched her."
Luke stepped forward.
"No."
"But you planned it."
The agents placed Madison in handcuffs.
As they escorted her away, she looked back at the empty jet.
The life she had sacrificed everything to obtain had vanished forever.
Later that afternoon, Emma was discharged from the hospital.
She stepped outside holding baby Hope in her arms.
Hundreds of reporters waited beyond the barricades.
Microphones stretched toward her.
"Could you say something to your husband?"
Emma paused.
She looked down at her sleeping daughter.
Then back at the cameras.
"I don't hate him."
The crowd became silent.
"I pity the man who believed money was worth more than love."
She kissed Hope's forehead.
"And I thank God my daughter will never grow up learning that lesson from him."
