CHAPTER 8 — THE FATHER'S FINAL DECISION

The courtroom reconvened after lunch.

Harold Whitaker slowly approached the witness stand.

Grant stared at him in disbelief.

"Dad..."

Harold never looked at his son.

He placed a sealed envelope into the judge's hands.

"I've kept this for nearly eight years."

The judge opened it carefully.

Inside was a signed shareholder agreement.

The prosecutor frowned.

"What relevance does this have?"

Harold answered calmly.

"The day Grant married Emma..."

"I amended my estate."

Grant's head snapped upward.

Harold continued.

"I had concerns about my son's character."

"So I created one condition."

"If Grant was ever found responsible for intentionally harming his wife or child..."

"He would automatically lose every controlling share in Whitaker Industries."

Gasps echoed through the courtroom.

Grant shot to his feet.

"You can't enforce that!"

Harold finally looked at him.

"I already have."

The company's board had unanimously voted that morning.

Grant no longer owned a controlling interest.

His executive authority had been permanently revoked.

Every trust connected to his inheritance had been frozen.

His personal access to family assets had been terminated.

The empire he had spent years expanding...

Disappeared in a single morning.

Grant's shoulders collapsed.

Madison slowly backed away from the defense table.

She realized there would be no fortune.

No private island.

No luxurious escape.

Only investigations.

Lawyers.

And prison.

Before court adjourned, the prosecutor requested one final witness.

A forensic accountant.

She projected dozens of financial transactions onto a large screen.

Hidden shell companies.

Offshore transfers.

Insurance premium increases.

Encrypted payments.

Every transaction formed one unmistakable timeline.

Grant hadn't acted impulsively.

He had spent nearly two years preparing for Emma's death.

The judge removed his glasses.

"I have reviewed enough evidence to establish probable cause on multiple felony charges."

Grant closed his eyes.

Two court deputies stepped forward.

The judge spoke one final sentence.

"Mr. Whitaker..."

"You will remain in custody pending trial."

The handcuffs clicked around Grant's wrists.

He turned desperately toward Madison.

She looked away.

Then quietly picked up her designer handbag.

Without saying a single word...

She walked out of the courtroom.

She never looked back.

Emma watched silently.

She felt no joy.

Only relief.

She looked through the courtroom window toward the afternoon sunlight.

Some endings were painful.

But they were still endings.

As she prepared to leave, Luke's phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

Caleb looked at him.

"What happened?"

Luke lowered the phone slowly.

"The police searched Madison's apartment."

"What did they find?"

Luke's voice became very quiet.

"A storage locker."

"Filled with evidence."

"But that's not the shocking part."

He looked directly at Emma.

"There are files..."

"...with the names of three other wealthy wives."

Emma's blood ran cold.

Grant and Madison hadn't created one plan.

They had perfected a pattern.

And Emma...

May you like

Might have been only the latest intended victim.

To be continued...
