CHAPTER 5 — THE ENVELOPE THAT DESTROYED HIS LAST LIE

Grant Whitaker had spent his entire career believing one simple rule.

If you controlled the narrative...

You controlled the outcome.

So when detectives escorted him into the interview room, he walked in wearing an expensive navy suit, a polished smile, and the confidence of a man who had talked his way out of countless scandals.

He wasn't handcuffed.

Not yet.

He sat down, folded his hands, and looked at the lead detective.

"I made a terrible mistake."

"I wasn't trying to hurt my wife."

"I simply believed she was exaggerating."

The detective nodded calmly.

"So you ignored twelve emergency calls."

Grant lowered his eyes.

"I regret that every second."

"You regret it now," the detective replied.

"But did you regret it while ordering a seventy-eight-year-old bottle of Bordeaux?"

Grant remained silent.

The detective slid several photographs across the table.

Grant barely looked at them.

"I've already seen those."

"I know."

The detective smiled slightly.

"These aren't the important ones."

He opened a large brown evidence envelope.

Inside was the forgotten backup footage from the kitchen camera.

This time...

The recording continued far beyond the part Grant believed existed.

His confident expression vanished.

The video showed him standing near the pantry before leaving the house.

Madison walked toward him.

"What if she calls someone?"

Grant answered without hesitation.

"She won't get far."

Then...

He quietly picked up Emma's handbag.

Removed the spare house keys.

Dropped them into his own coat pocket.

Madison laughed.

"You're unbelievable."

Grant shrugged.

"I'm being careful."

The detective paused the video.

"You testified that your wife could have left the house whenever she wanted."

Grant swallowed.

No words came out.

The detective played another ten seconds.

Grant reached into his pocket.

Pressed the electronic deadbolt.

The front door locked automatically.

A timestamp flashed across the screen.

Two minutes before Emma's first emergency call.

The room fell silent.

Grant finally whispered...

"...I want my lawyer."

The detective closed the laptop.

"You should."

"Because this interview is over."

"As of this moment..."

"...you're officially the target of an attempted homicide investigation."

Across the city...

Emma held her tiny daughter for the very first time.

The premature infant fit almost entirely inside her arms.

A nurse smiled.

"Have you chosen a name?"

Emma looked into the baby's sleepy blue eyes.

"Hope."

The nurse nodded.

"A beautiful name."

Emma kissed her daughter's forehead.

"No."

She whispered through tears.

"It's a promise."

Outside the room, Caleb's phone vibrated.

He answered.

"What did you find?"

Luke's voice came through quietly.

"I found Grant's real motive."

Caleb frowned.

"What is it?"

Luke took a slow breath.

"There was never just one affair."

"There was a financial deadline."

"And Emma..."

"...was worth far more dead than divorced."

Caleb's expression instantly hardened.

He slowly looked through the nursery window at his sister holding her newborn daughter.

Then he whispered one sentence.

May you like

"He never wanted freedom."

"He wanted the money."
