CHAPTER 4 — THE BROTHERS WHO CAME PREPARED

By sunrise, the story had exploded.
Every major news station carried the same headline.
Billionaire CEO Accused of Abandoning Pregnant Wife During Medical Emergency.
Whitaker Industries lost nearly two billion dollars in market value before the opening bell.
Investors demanded answers.
Employees whispered in every hallway.
Grant's empire was beginning to crack.
But his biggest nightmare hadn't even arrived yet.
Luke Whitaker walked into the District Attorney's office carrying three black evidence boxes.
Detectives looked up as he entered.
"You came prepared," one of them joked.
Luke placed the boxes on the conference table.
"I only brought the first half."
Inside were phone records.
Medical reports.
Security footage.
GPS tracking.
Restaurant surveillance.
Witness statements.
Even the receipt showing Grant had ordered a bottle of vintage wine exactly three minutes after ignoring Emma's emergency call.
One detective looked stunned.
"You built this overnight?"
Luke shook his head.
"No."
"My sister's life was worth documenting the moment she married him."
Meanwhile...
Emma was finally wheeled into the neonatal intensive care unit.
Behind the clear incubator lay a tiny baby girl.
No bigger than a loaf of bread.
Tiny fingers.
Tiny heartbeat.
Tiny breaths.
Emma reached through the opening and gently touched her daughter's hand.
The baby wrapped her impossibly small fingers around Emma's index finger.
Emma broke down.
"I'll protect you."
"No matter what."
Behind her, Caleb quietly wiped away a tear before anyone noticed.
Across the city...
Grant received an unexpected visitor.
His father.
Harold Whitaker.
A man who rarely showed emotion.
He entered the office without speaking.
Closed the door.
Then placed a newspaper on Grant's desk.
The front page showed Emma being wheeled into the hospital.
Grant looked away.
"I can explain."
Harold raised one hand.
"Don't."
"You left your wife."
"You abandoned your daughter."
"You disgraced our family."
Grant swallowed.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Harold leaned forward.
Those six words confirmed everything.
He slowly removed an envelope from inside his jacket.
"What is that?"
Grant asked.
"The board voted this morning."
Harold slid the document across the desk.
Grant opened it.
His face lost all color.
Emergency suspension.
Removal of executive authority.
Frozen corporate accounts.
Loss of voting control.
Effective immediately.
"You can't do this."
Harold's eyes remained cold.
"I already did."
As he turned toward the door, he stopped one last time.
"When I built this company, I believed one thing."
"Money can replace almost anything."
He looked back at his son.
"I was wrong."
"It can't replace character."
The door closed.
Grant stood alone.
For the first time in his life...
He had no power.
No allies.
No control.
Just then, his attorney called.
"Grant..."
His voice sounded shaken.
"The police have issued a request for your interview."
Grant frowned.
"On what charge?"
The lawyer hesitated.
Then quietly answered.
"They're no longer treating this as negligence."
"They're investigating it as a planned criminal act."
Grant slowly lowered the phone.
Outside his office windows...
Police vehicles pulled into the parking lot.
And among them...
Three familiar black pickup trucks rolled in behind the patrol cars.
The Whitaker brothers had arrived.
This time...
May you like
They weren't carrying folders.
They were carrying the truth.
