CHAPTER 7 — THE VOICE THEY NEVER EXPECTED TO HEAR

Three days later...

The courthouse steps were surrounded by cameras.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Every major network wanted one thing.

A glimpse of Grant Whitaker.

The billionaire who had gone from admired CEO to the face of a criminal investigation in less than a week.

Grant stepped from the police vehicle wearing an expensive gray suit.

His lawyers surrounded him like a human shield.

Questions exploded from every direction.

"Did you try to kill your wife?"

"Did you fake your concern after the baby was born?"

"Was the affair part of an insurance scheme?"

Grant kept walking.

He never answered.

Inside the courtroom, Emma sat quietly beside her brothers.

She looked thinner.

Paler.

But there was a strength in her eyes no one had seen before.

Baby Hope remained in the neonatal unit, improving every day.

Emma gently touched the tiny bracelet around her wrist—the one the nurses had given Hope at birth.

It reminded her why she refused to be afraid anymore.

The hearing began.

Grant's attorney stood first.

"My client made terrible marital decisions, but poor judgment is not attempted murder."

He argued that Grant had assumed Emma would call an ambulance.

He insisted the locked door had been a misunderstanding caused by the electronic security system.

For a moment...

The courtroom grew uncertain.

Then the prosecutor rose.

"We call our next witness."

The doors opened.

An elderly woman slowly walked toward the witness stand.

Grant frowned.

Madison's face drained of color.

"Eleanor Brooks?"

Grant whispered.

The former housekeeper took the oath.

She looked directly at the jury.

"I worked in the Whitaker home for eleven years."

"I loved Mrs. Whitaker like family."

The prosecutor nodded.

"Did you ever overhear a conversation between the defendant and Madison Vale?"

"I did."

The room became silent.

Eleanor described hearing Grant discuss insurance money.

She described Madison laughing about Emma being "too trusting."

Grant's lawyer immediately stood.

"Objection."

"Hearsay."

The judge nodded.

"Sustained."

Grant smiled for the first time that morning.

Then the prosecutor smiled too.

"No further questions."

He reached beneath his table.

"Instead..."

"We would like to play Exhibit Forty-Two."

The courtroom lights dimmed.

The flash drive Eleanor had delivered to Emma was inserted into the court's system.

A recording began.

Grant's voice filled the room.

"If she keeps bleeding..."

"...she won't survive long enough to ruin anything."

Madison laughed.

"The baby?"

Grant answered without emotion.

"If Emma dies first..."

"...everything becomes much easier."

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Even Grant's own attorney slowly lowered his head.

Grant looked around in panic.

"That recording was edited!"

"It was taken out of context!"

But the damage had already been done.

For the first time since his arrest...

Grant realized he wasn't losing a marriage.

He was losing his freedom.

Outside the courthouse...

One black SUV arrived quietly.

An older man stepped out.

Harold Whitaker.

Grant's father.

He had refused every interview.

Refused every statement.

Refused to defend his son.

Today...

He carried a leather briefcase.

Inside it...

May you like

Was one document that no one knew existed.

And it was about to change everything.
