CHAPTER 6 — THE LIFE INSURANCE SECRET

Luke Whitaker spread dozens of documents across the conference table.
Every page pointed toward the same conclusion.
Grant Whitaker hadn't made one reckless decision.
He had followed a plan.
A careful...
Patient...
Calculated plan.
Dylan leaned over the paperwork.
"What am I looking at?"
Luke pointed to a policy dated eighteen months earlier.
"Life insurance."
Caleb frowned.
"How much?"
Luke turned the final page.
The room went silent.
Twenty-five million dollars.
Dylan stared in disbelief.
"Emma never told us about this."
"Because she didn't know."
Luke slid another document forward.
Grant had quietly increased the policy six months earlier.
He had also added an accidental death rider.
Then...
Only three weeks later...
He began transferring personal assets into shell companies.
Every move had been timed perfectly.
Caleb slowly clenched his fists.
"He was preparing long before Madison."
Luke nodded.
"Madison wasn't the beginning."
"She was part of the plan."
That afternoon...
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Grant's penthouse.
They expected expensive watches.
Luxury cars.
Financial records.
Instead...
One officer discovered a locked fireproof safe hidden behind a framed painting.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
Property deeds.
And one sealed envelope marked:
OPEN ONLY IF EMMA DIES.
The detective carefully opened it.
Everyone in the room froze.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Not from Grant.
From Madison.
It read:
"Once the insurance clears, we leave for Switzerland. Burn every copy of the house security files. No mistakes this time."
The detective looked up.
"No mistakes..."
He repeated quietly.
"So there was a first mistake."
At the hospital...
Emma was preparing to rest when an elderly woman asked to enter.
She introduced herself softly.
"My name is Eleanor Brooks."
Emma had never seen her before.
"I'm sorry..."
"I think you have the wrong room."
The woman shook her head.
"No."
"I worked as your housekeeper for eleven years."
Emma's eyes widened.
"Eleanor?"
The older woman nodded.
"I retired last winter."
She looked toward the sleeping baby.
"I couldn't stay silent anymore."
She placed a small flash drive into Emma's hand.
"I saw something the week before Grant left you."
Emma frowned.
"What?"
Eleanor looked toward the closed hospital door to make sure no one was listening.
Then she whispered...
"I heard Grant and Madison talking in your study."
Emma's heart began racing.
"They weren't discussing a divorce."
"They were discussing..."
Eleanor's voice trembled.
"...how long it would take for you to bleed before anyone found you."
Emma's face turned white.
The flash drive suddenly felt as heavy as stone.
If Eleanor was telling the truth...
Grant hadn't simply abandoned her.
He had expected her to die.
And somewhere inside that tiny flash drive...
May you like
Was the conversation that could send him to prison forever.
To be continued...
