CHAPTER 1 – The Little Girl Who Refused to Eat Alone

The morning rush had almost ended when Daniel Harper walked into the tiny roadside diner. He wasn't looking for conversation—just a quiet breakfast before another exhausting day.

As he waited for his coffee, something caught his attention.

A little girl, no older than seven, sat alone in the corner booth.

She wasn't playing with a phone.

She wasn't coloring.

She simply stared at a cheeseburger that had already gone cold.

Every few seconds she looked toward the front door... then back at the empty seat across from her.

The waitress sighed.

"She's been here for almost an hour."

Daniel frowned.

"Where are her parents?"

The waitress lowered her voice.

"Her dad works construction nearby. Every Friday he tells her he'll come during his lunch break."

"But today..."

She glanced toward the untouched burger.

"He never showed up."

Daniel watched as the little girl carefully cut the cheeseburger exactly in half.

She wrapped one piece in a napkin.

Then she whispered so softly almost no one could hear it.

"I'm saving this for Daddy... because he always lets me eat first."

The words hit Daniel like a punch to the chest.

The entire diner suddenly felt silent.

One customer quietly wiped away tears.

Another looked away, pretending not to notice.

Daniel stood.

He walked toward her table.

"Sweetheart... would you like another burger? This one's getting cold."

She smiled politely.

"No, thank you."

"I don't want Daddy to think I ate without him."

Daniel's heart broke.

Then...

The diner door suddenly burst open.

May you like

A dirty construction helmet rolled across the floor.

And every customer froze.
