CHAPTER 6 – The Father Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The warehouse fell eerily silent.
Every detective instinctively reached for their weapons.
A lone man stepped out of the shadows.
His beard was streaked with gray.
A deep scar ran across the left side of his face.
But what caught Daniel's attention wasn't the scar.
It was the old silver pocket watch hanging from the man's neck.
Daniel had seen that watch before.
In every childhood photo hanging inside the Harper mansion.
It had belonged to Richard Harper...
...the billionaire who had supposedly died twenty-eight years ago.
The man slowly raised both hands.
"I'm not your enemy."
Daniel stared at him.
"Who are you?"
The stranger looked directly into Daniel's eyes.
"My name is Michael Carter."
"I was your father's closest friend."
"And I was there the night you were born."
Daniel's heart pounded.
"Then tell me..."
"Who am I?"
Michael took a long breath.
"The Harpers didn't steal you."
"They saved you."
Everyone froze.
Victoria's confident smile disappeared for the first time.
Marcus shouted,
"He's lying!"
Michael ignored him.
"Twenty-eight years ago, someone wanted to wipe out two families in one night."
"The Harper family..."
"...and yours."
Daniel's voice trembled.
"My family?"
Michael nodded.
"Your biological parents uncovered a billion-dollar corruption network involving politicians, construction giants, and organized crime."
"They were marked for death."
"The night you were born, assassins stormed the hospital."
"Richard Harper made a decision."
"He switched the babies."
"He allowed the world to believe his own son had survived..."
"...while secretly sending you away under the Harper name."
Daniel felt tears welling in his eyes.
"So Richard Harper..."
"...was protecting me?"
Michael nodded.
"He sacrificed everything."
"He even faked his own death to keep the secret alive."
Marcus slammed his fist onto a steel table.
"No!"
"That company belongs to me!"
Michael slowly turned toward him.
"No, Marcus."
"It never did."
Then he pulled a sealed envelope from inside his jacket.
Across the front were seven handwritten words.
OPEN ONLY IF DANIEL IS IN DANGER.
Inside was Richard Harper's final letter.
Daniel unfolded the yellowed pages with trembling hands.
The first line stole the air from his lungs.
"My son...
If you are reading this, then I have already failed to protect you."
Daniel's vision blurred.
Michael quietly continued,
"Richard didn't leave you a company."
"He left you something much more dangerous."
Daniel looked up.
"What?"
Michael answered with one sentence.
"A hidden account containing twenty billion dollars..."
"...and the complete list of everyone responsible for murdering your real parents."
Before Daniel could speak—
A deafening explosion ripped through the warehouse.
The walls shook violently.
Smoke filled the air.
Detectives shouted as the lights went out.
When the emergency lights finally flickered back on...
Marcus...
Victoria...
And Michael Carter...
Had all vanished.
Only one thing remained on the floor.
Richard Harper's pocket watch.
May you like
Inside it was a tiny handwritten note.
"Trust no one... not even the man who calls himself your father."
