CHAPTER 2 – The Truth No One Expected

A man stumbled inside.
His clothes were covered in dust.
One arm was wrapped in a blood-stained bandage.
His face was pale with exhaustion.
The little girl jumped from her seat.
"DADDY!"
She ran into his arms before anyone could stop her.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, tears streaming down his face.
"The construction site collapsed... my phone was destroyed... I thought you'd already gone home."
The little girl immediately unwrapped the half of the burger she had been protecting.
"I saved it for you."
The father looked at the cold sandwich...
Then at his daughter's hopeful smile.
He couldn't hold back anymore.
He collapsed to his knees and cried.
The entire diner fell silent.
Even the waitress had tears running down her cheeks.
Daniel quietly walked to the register.
"I'd like to pay for their meal."
Then he paused.
"And every meal they eat here for the next year."
The waitress stared in disbelief.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
"What company does he work for?"
The father nervously answered.
"Harper Construction."
Daniel smiled.
"Then tomorrow..."
"You don't come back as a laborer."
The father blinked.
"What?"
Daniel reached into his wallet and placed a business card on the table.
"My name is Daniel Harper."
"I'm the owner of the company."
"I've been searching for honest people to lead my new safety division."
"You missed lunch today..."
"Because you stayed behind making sure everyone else survived."
"I watched the security reports this morning."
"You saved three workers before the roof collapsed."
The father stared at him, speechless.
"But... how did you know?"
Daniel smiled at the little girl.
"Because a child who saves half her meal for her father..."
"Usually learned kindness from the man who raised her."
One week later...
The father returned to the diner.
Not wearing a dusty construction vest.
But a clean white shirt with a company badge that read:
Director of Site Safety.
As for the little girl...
She never had to eat alone again.
