Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

The man walked toward the mud pit with deliberate, terrifying calm. His boots sank into the mire, but he didn't care. He knelt beside Mia, pulling off his heavy trench coat and wrapping it around her cold, shivering shoulders.
"Are you hurt, sweetheart?" he asked gently, wiping a patch of mud off her forehead.
"I... I lost my medical pump, Dad," Mia sobbed, clutching his arm. "When they pushed the chair, it broke..."
The chief’s eyes snapped toward Jason. The warmth in his voice vanished, replaced by an absolute, suffocating darkness.
"My name is Chief Inspector Marcus Vance," the man said, standing up to his full height.
Jason gasped. "Vance?!"
"Yes, Jason," Marcus said, stepping closer until he was inches from Jason's face. "I am your uncle. And the girl you just humiliated, the girl you tried to destroy for views... is your cousin."
The world seemed to spin under Jason's feet. His mind raced through a blur of family rumors—his father’s estranged brother who had vanished fifteen years ago into deep government operations, the secret branch of the family no one ever spoke about at Thanksgiving.
"No... no, that's impossible," Jason stammered, backing away. "My dad said Marcus died in a deployment!"
"Your father lied to protect you from the truth of what our family actually does," Marcus whispered smoothly. "And more importantly, he lied to protect you from me."
Marcus gestured to the tactical officers. "Seize their phones. Secure the video feed. And place these three under dark-site detention."
"Wait!" Mark screamed as an officer tackled him to the damp earth, cuffing his hands behind his back. "We didn't know! It was just a prank! It was just for TikTok!"
"A prank?" Marcus looked down at his daughter, whose breathing was becoming rapidly shallow and ragged. "Mia doesn't just use a wheelchair because of a physical disability, boys. She’s carrying a critical neurological implant. That pump you broke was regulating her life support."

Jason’s face drained of every last drop of color. He looked down at the smashed plastic casing lying in the puddle near the wheelchair’s wheel.
"If she dies in the next twenty minutes," Marcus whispered into Jason’s ear, "you won't be charged with bullying. You'll be executed for treason."
