Chapter 4 - The Hunted

Before Jason could digest his father’s terrifying revelation, the sound of heavy gunfire shattered the night air.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The tactical officers guarding the perimeter dropped to the asphalt. Bright muzzle flashes illuminated the dark woods surrounding the highway.

"Get down!" Richard screamed, pulling Jason out of the van just as a volley of high-caliber rounds tore through the vehicle’s steel frame.

Mark and Leo screamed in terror, scrambling out behind them as smoke and sparks filled the air.

Three dark, unmarked suburban trucks blew through the police barricade, blinding the area with floodlights. Men clad in full tactical gear—devoid of any police badges or government insignia—poured out, raising suppressed automatic rifles.

"They aren't here for us," Richard yelled over the deafening noise, shoving Jason toward the ditch by the side of the road. "They're here for the drive! They saw your livestream!"

"Who are they?!" Jason yelled, rolling into the mud—the very same mud he had forced Mia into just an hour ago.

"The syndicate your uncle has been hunting for five years!" Richard shouted back, pulling a hidden handgun from his holster and firing back at the attackers. "When you put Mia on camera, you exposed her location to the people who want her dead!"

Jason lay in the cold muck, shivering violently. For the first time in his life, the reality of his actions crashed down upon him. He hadn't just made a harmless video for clout. His arrogant, cruel desire for attention had exposed his cousin’s hidden location, disabled her life support, and brought a squad of mercenary killers directly to their doorstep.

Through the chaos, Jason saw Chief Marcus step out from behind the medical transport, firing a heavy sidearm with terrifying precision.

Marcus caught Jason’s eye across the battlefield through the smoke and fire. He didn't look angry anymore. His expression was pure, cold resolution.

"Jason!" Marcus’s voice boomed over the gunfire. "If you want to live, get my daughter out of that ambulance NOW!"
