Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Alliance

Jason didn't think; his body moved purely on adrenaline.
He scrambled on his hands and knees through the dirt, bullets snapping the twigs above his head. He vaulted into the back of the idling medical transport.
Inside, Mia was hyperventilating. Her skin was ghastly pale, her lips turning a faint shade of blue as the backup battery on her external respiratory monitor flickered red.
"Mia!" Jason yelled, grabbing a pair of medical shears from a tray to cut the zip-ties off his own wrists. "Mia, can you hear me?!"
She looked at him with heavy, half-open eyes. "J-Jason...?"
"I'm sorry," he wept, his hands shaking so hard he almost dropped the shears. "I'm so sorry, Mia. I was a monster. Please, just tell me what to do!"
"The... the red cable," she gasped faintly, pointing toward a backup battery unit strapped under her wheelchair. "Plug it into... the chest monitor... before the main power dies..."
Outside, a grenade exploded, rocking the ambulance violently. The rear glass shattered, showering them with sharp fragments.
Through the shattered window, a mercenary lunged forward, reaching an armored hand into the vehicle to grab Mia’s collar.
"I got the girl!" the mercenary shouted.
"NO!" Jason roared.
Without thinking, Jason grabbed a heavy steel oxygen tank from the wall and swung it with all his strength, smashing it directly into the attacker's helmet. The mercenary fell backward out of the van, unconscious.
Jason slammed the heavy rear doors shut and locked them. With trembling fingers, he picked up the red power cable, matched the ports on Mia’s chest console, and shoved it home.
A sharp BEEP echoed through the cabin. Mia gasped sharply, taking a full, deep breath of air as her pulse monitor stabilized.
She looked at Jason, her eyes wide with shock. "You... you saved me."

"I almost killed you," Jason said, slumped against the wall, covered in blood and mud. "I don't deserve your thanks."
The front cabin door flew open, and Chief Marcus scrambled into the driver's seat, bleeding from a graze on his shoulder. He slammed the vehicle into gear, slammed his foot on the gas, and tore away from the kill zone, leaving the burning wreckage behind.
