Chapter 2 - THE BLACKOUT ARCHIVES

DEEP IN THE RESORT UNDERGROUND, A DIABOLICAL SECRET IS UNCOVERED! 😱Screams erupted throughout the lobby as emergency sirens began to wail. Red backup lights hummed to life, casting an eerie, blood-red glow over the shattered glass and dust-filled air.
"Elena!" Marcus shouted through the chaos, pulling me up by my arm. "The explosion originated from the server room downstairs. He’s trying to wipe the main archives!"
I wiped a fresh smear of blood from my eye. "He doesn't just want to wipe the digital files, Marcus. He knows the physical ledger—the one my mother kept before she died—is in the sub-basement vault. If he burns that, we lose the proof of the offshore land deals."
I looked around the red-lit lobby. Daniel was gone. He had used the panic and the smoke to slip down the private executive stairwell.
"Stay here, Ms. Somor. The local police are already en route," Marcus urged.
"No," I said, my voice hardening. "He took my mother from me. He took my life twelve hours ago. I’m not letting him walk away."
Ignoring the throbbing pain in my ankle, I limped heavily toward the security access door behind the reception desk. I swiped the gold founder's badge against the backup scanner. The heavy steel door clicked open, revealing the concrete stairs leading into the belly of the resort.
The air grew thicker, smelling of burnt wires and smoke as I descended into the sub-basement. The resort was built over an old network of coastal bunkers, a fortress designed by my grandfather during the volatile early days of the shipping industry. Daniel knew these corridors well, but I knew them better.
As I reached the vault level, I saw a trail of blood on the floor. Someone had been hurt in the blast—or during a hasty escape.
Following the trail around a blind corner, I found Vanessa slumped against the concrete wall, clutching her shoulder. A piece of shrapnel from the server room blast had caught her.
"Elena..." she gasped, her eyes wide with terror as she saw me approaching out of the shadows like a ghost. "Please... don't leave me here. He locked the vault door from the inside. He’s going to set the secondary charges."
I knelt in front of her, completely unmoved by her tears. "Why did you help him, Vanessa? You knew what happened to my mother."
"I didn't know about your mother!" she sobbed, holding her bleeding shoulder. "I only knew about the land. Daniel was selling the northern coastal reserves to a foreign syndicate—The Obsidian Group. Your mother found out, and she was going to veto the sale. Daniel told me your mother died of a heart attack on that boat. I swear it!"
I gripped the gold badge tight in my hand. "How do I override the vault lock if the main servers are dead?"
May you like
Vanessa swallowed hard, looking toward the end of the hall. "The vault doesn't run on electricity. It runs on a weight-metric mechanical lock calibrated to your grandfather's original specifications. But Daniel brought someone else with him. Someone you thought was on your side."
Before I could ask who, a shadow stretched across the concrete floor behind me. I turned just in time to see a heavy iron pipe swinging directly toward my head.
