Chapter 4 - THE SUBTERRANEAN RACE

NO LIGHTS. NO ESCAPE. A DEADLY GAME OF HIDE-AND-SEEK! 🏃‍♀️💨The halon gas flooded the narrow corridor, cutting visibility to absolute zero and starving the air of oxygen. Marcus began coughing violently, the heavy pipe clattering to the floor as he choked on the gas.

"Daniel!" Marcus roared through the thick white fog. "Where are you?"

I held my breath, covering my nose with the torn, bloodied sleeve of my white dress. Staying low to the ground where the air was slightly clearer, I scrambled past Marcus’s flailing legs. My hands found the leather briefcase Daniel had dropped in the confusion. I snatched it, along with Daniel’s discarded master keycard, and crawled toward the emergency exit that led to the resort's private subterranean docks.

"She has the briefcase!" Daniel’s voice screamed from somewhere in the mist. "Find her! She can't get out through the docks!"

I burst through the heavy exit doors into the lower caverns. Here, the air was cold and filled with the damp, salty spray of the ocean. A long concrete pier stretched out into the black water of the underground cove, where a high-speed corporate speedboat was tied to the docks, its engine idling with a low, rhythmic thrum.

The rain outside was causing the tide to surge, lifting the boat violently up and down against the rubber bumpers.

My ribs screamed in agony with every step, but adrenaline kept me moving. I reached the boat, tossing the briefcase onto the leather passenger seat. Just as I reached down to untie the mooring lines, a heavy hand grabbed my hair from behind.

I gasped as I was yanked backward onto the hard concrete of the pier. Daniel stood over me, his clothes disheveled, his eyes bloodshot with pure hatred.

"You've ruined everything!" he shrieked, pinning me down with his knee against my injured chest. The pain was blinding; spots danced across my vision. "The Obsidian Group will kill me if those deeds don't clear tonight! You should have died in the car, Elena!"

His hands wrapped around my throat, cutting off my air supply. I thrashed beneath him, my fingers scraping against the rough concrete of the pier, searching for anything to use as a weapon.

Through the roaring sound of the ocean and the rushing blood in my ears, I could hear Marcus’s heavy footsteps echoing down the cavern corridor. He was coming to finish the job.

My hand brushed against a heavy, rusted metal cleat bolted to the pier. With the last ounce of my fading strength, I gripped the gold founder's badge, wedged it into the gap beneath the cleat to use as leverage, and pried a loose, jagged piece of rusted iron free.

I drove the metal shard straight into Daniel’s thigh.
