Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW TRUSTEE

THE WILL WAS AMENDED YESTERDAY?! THE REAL MASTERMIND IS STILL IN THE BOARDROOM! 💼🔥The alarms saved my life. The rush of medical staff into the room forced Clara to drop the badge and blend into the fleeing visitors, escaping through the service elevator before the federal guards realized what had occurred. By the time my system was flushed of the toxin, the sun was rising over the city skyline.
I refused to stay in the hospital a second longer. Bandaged, bruised, and wearing a dark trench coat over my hospital gown, I walked out against medical advice, flanked by two federal agents who finally understood that my life was under active threat.
"We traced the security footage," Agent Vance said as we rode in the back of a heavily armored SUV toward the Somor Trust Headquarters downtown. "The nurse was a plant. But that’s not your biggest problem, Elena. Look at this."
He handed me a tablet displaying a live financial ticker of Somor Trust Group. The stock wasn't crashing. It was surging.
"How is this possible?" I asked, my blood running cold. "The land deals are frozen. The board should be under indictment."
"They would be, if the board still existed," Vance replied grimly. "An hour ago, a hidden clause in the Somor Family Trust covenant was activated. It’s called the 'Proxy Sovereignty' clause. If the majority owner is incapacitated or deemed medically unfit—which your hospital records from last night conveniently state—all voting power transfers to a anonymous secondary trustee."
"Eleanor," I whispered.
"We don't know," Vance said. "The digital signature originated from an encrypted server in Zurich. Whoever it is, they just called an emergency shareholder meeting. It starts in ten minutes. They are voting to dissolve the environmental protections on the northern coast and finalize the transfer to the Obsidian Group."
Ten minutes later, the armored SUV slammed to a halt in front of the glass monolith of the Somor Tower. I didn't wait for the guards to open the door. I pushed through the heavy glass entrance, my boots clicking against the polished marble floor.
The security guards in the lobby tried to step in my way, but I held up the duplicate gold badge. "Move, or face immediate federal obstruction charges."

We breached the penthouse boardroom just as the final vote was being called. The room was filled with billionaire investors, international lawyers, and the surviving board members. At the head of the table sat a man I hadn't seen in a decade—my grandfather's estranged brother, Arthur Somor.
He looked up, a cruel, welcoming smile spreading across his weathered face. "Ah, Elena. We were just celebrating your miraculous survival. And your timely retirement."
