Chapter 5 - THE TIDE TURNS

THE ASSASSIN BECOMES THE PREY IN THE STORM OF THE CENTURY! 🌊Daniel screamed in agony, his grip loosening from my throat as he clutched his bleeding leg and fell backward into the churning water of the cove.

I collapsed onto my side, gasping for air, the cold ocean spray stinging the cuts on my face.

"Elena!" Marcus burst out of the cavern doors, his face contorted in rage. He saw Daniel splashing in the dark water, struggling against the rising undertow, and then he saw me, crawling toward the speedboat.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled a compact firearm from his tactical belt. "Game over, kid."

Bang!

A gunshot echoed through the cavern, but it didn't come from Marcus's gun.

Marcus froze, his eyes widening in shock as a dark crimson stain bloomed across his chest. He staggered backward, his weapon slipping from his fingers, before collapsing off the edge of the pier into the dark abyss below.

I looked up, trembling, expecting to see the police.

Instead, standing at the entrance of the cavern, holding a smoking silencer-equipped pistol, was a woman dressed in a pristine, tailored black trench coat. The red emergency lights caught her face, and my heart stopped beating entirely.

It was impossible.

"Mother?" I whispered, my voice cracking.

The woman walked slowly down the pier, her boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete. She lowered the gun, looking down at me with a cold, analytical expression that lacked any maternal warmth.

"You always were resilient, Elena," she said, her voice smooth and completely devoid of emotion. "But you were never supposed to find that evidence drive. It wasn't meant for your eyes."

I stared at her, my mind spinning into a abyss of confusion. "You... you died three years ago. Daniel had you killed. The video—"

"The video was a performance," my mother, Eleanor Somor, interrupted calmly. She knelt down next to the speedboat and picked up the leather briefcase containing the deeds. "Daniel thought he was the mastermind, but he was merely the distraction. I needed the world to believe I was dead so the Somor Trust could liquidate its domestic assets without federal scrutiny."

"You framed your own nephew? You let me believe you were dead for three years?!" I screamed, the betrayal burning hotter than any pain Daniel had inflicted.

"I built this empire, Elena," Eleanor said, standing up and looking out toward the stormy open ocean. "And to save it from the upcoming collapse, I had to partner with the Obsidian Group. Daniel was supposed to handle you gently, but he grew sloppy. He became a liability."

She looked down at me, her expression completely detached. "And now, unfortunately, so are you."
