Chapter 24 - The Trap at the Pier

I didn't call lawyers. I didn't press the media.

Instead, I unlocked the lower level of my father's vault—a section Alexander and I had promised never to touch unless the family faced total extinction. Inside was my father's private intelligence network: an elite group of black-ops mercenaries accountable to no government, loyal only to the Harrington bloodline.

By midnight, I tracked Lucas to an abandoned shipping terminal on Pier 42, where a private cargo ship was preparing to depart for international waters.

I walked onto the rain-slicked concrete alone, wearing a long dark coat, carrying a single silver briefcase.

Lucas emerged from the shadows of a container, flanked by eight heavily armed mercenaries. In his arms, wrapped in a warm blanket, was my son Leo.

"I knew you'd come alone, Clara," Lucas smiled, his eyes gleaming with victory. "Where is the proud heiress now? No brother to protect you. No board of directors to vote for you."

"The briefcase has the signed transfer papers for Harrington Global," I said, my voice dead silent, stepping closer through the downpour. "It gives you total ownership of every asset, every bank account, every subsidiary. And here," I pulled out a vial from my pocket, "is the master key to the vault."

Lucas’s smile widened. "Smart girl. Give it to me, and you take your son and the antidote for your brother."

I tossed the briefcase at his feet. Lucas dropped his guard for a single second, motioning for his guard to pick up the case and check the documents inside.

"It's all signed," the guard confirmed, scanning the pages.

"Good," Lucas smirked, raising his pistol to my forehead. "Now, as promised... you don't get to survive the night."
